FAMILY and friends of police sergeant Ian Spence made sure he was not forgotten on his 53rd birthday.

Ian – known to his police colleagues as Harry – died in March, aged 52, after a nine-month battle against cancer.

But his widow, Naomi, was determined his birthday should not go unnoticed and organised for family and friends to release balloons.

"I think about 50 were released in total," said Naomi, who let her balloon off at a family wedding.

Deputy Chief Constable Tim Madgwick released a balloon in the police memorial garden in Harrogate, and further balloons were let off outside Skipton and Harrogate Police Stations.

Those finding the balloons were asked to make a contribution to Manorlands Hospice, which cared for Ian during his final days.

Sgt Paul Cording said: "I worked with Harry for five years during my time at Skipton. He was a fantastic gent, with a wicked sense of humour, who is sadly missed by many.

"When I heard about the balloon release, I thought it was a great idea and was amazed when I got a message on Twitter saying one had been located on St Andrew's beach [in Scotland]. I just hope Manorlands, which looked after Harry so well, raises some funds to continue to provide the fantastic care it offers."
