CRAVEN residents were given an insight into the work of local authorities as council workers took to Twitter.

Councils, including Craven District Council and Skipton Town Council, tweeted using the hashtag #OurDay bringing services – from planning and housing to waste management and museums – to life in just 140 characters.

Craven Council tweeted 49 times throughout the day, giving a snapshot of council work to its 3,390 followers on Twitter.

The council’s tweets were seen 12,496 times, with 28 retweets and 25 link clicks.

On a wild, wet and windy day, the tweet that received the most attention was “Sandbags continue to be deployed throughout the district as the rain continues! All our vehicles are out there #OurDay #StormBarney”, which was viewed 910 times.

The tweet that had the most engagements was “Bryan, our @BradfordUni student, finds a detonator in the incredible lead mining collection @CravenMuseum #OurDay", which earned 12 engagements.

Skipton Town Council included in its tweets pictures of council staff meeting to discuss road closures for this weekend's Santa Fun Run.

#OurDay was organised by the Local Government Association, which represents more than 370 local authorities across the country.

Craven District Council leader, Cllr Richard Foster, said: “Our council officers provide a range of vital services in the district – #OurDay was a great opportunity to show residents just how hard they work.

“From arranging funerals to clearing culverts, from delivering sandbags to providing swimming sessions for babies, our staff provide a huge variety of services."

He added: “Often, the tasks they perform go unseen and unsung, but their work is crucial to our communities.”
