FOR the first time in a decade, Ingleborough District Scouts broke their tradition of holding an open-air St George’s Day Parade in favour of moving indoors to join the congregation of St Mary’s Church in Ingleton.

Setting off from the swimming pool, the parade, led by the Kildwick and Farnhill Scout band, marched up Sammy Lane, where the salute was taken by Ingleton Group chairman, Carl Lis.

The 200-strong parade then snaked its way through the square en route to the church.

The service began with the entrance of a tabard-bedecked St George, who was chased around the aisles by an enormous colourful dragon, after which the team rector, the Rev Anne Russell, received the flags from ten Scout colour parties.

Throughout the service, all the young people were involved in the activities, which ranged from Beavers talking about pictures they had drawn to illustrate the things they were grateful for, Cubs assisting in a quiz and two Scouts reading the lesson.

As well as celebrating St George, the patron Saint of Scouting, the service also marked the 100th anniversary of Cub Scouting.

To this end, the rector’s talk involved Scouts assembling ingredients that were then magically transformed into a decorated birthday cake, to be shared by the whole congregation.

The Renewal of Promises was led by Beaver leader, Jackie Rowe; Cub leader, Emily Coates; and group Scout leader, Carl Unsworth.

A collection raised £270, which will be shared between St Mary’s Church and the Cave Rescue Organisation.
