WEST Craven High School in Barnoldswick took more than 100 students to the University of Central Lancashire's Preston campus to find out if university was for them.

The invitation to attend UCLan's free Aspirational Day gave Year 9 and 10 students the opportunity to have a look around the campus facilities.

The pupils were guided by student ambassadors and encouraged to ask questions about living away from home, deciding which university to apply to and the range of subjects available to study. Students also found out about clubs and societies.

Many students on the trip had not considered university previously - but many changed their minds during the course of the day.

Gail Hargreaves, able, gifted and talented co-ordinator, said: "The whole point of the trip was to encourage our young people to aim high; to really think about their true potential.

"We need to give students as much exposure as possible to opportunities that help make the whole point of learning real for them - give them access to life beyond school and college."
