FOR its screening at Skipton Plaza on Sunday, May 5, Skipton Film Club is proud to present the fabulous 1964 French New Wave musical, ‘The Umbrellas of Cherbourg’.
Now released in a brand new print to celebrate its 60th anniversary, the film tells the bittersweet love story of Genevieve, played by Catherine Deneuve, and Guy, lovers whose romance is interrupted by war.
The film club's Paul Valentine, said: "Visually, the film is ravishing – every scene is shot in vivid pastel colours that mirror the emotions of the characters. Coming at the tail end of the French New Wave, there has to be an innovative element, and it’s this: all the dialogue is sung, with a famous score by Michael Legrand.
"This makes the film a wonderful hybrid movie – part romance, part musical, part opera, but all New Wave. It also explains why director Damien Chazelle has described ‘The Umbrellas of Cherbourg’ as one of the greatest films of all time and a major influence on his own modern musical, ‘La La Land’.
"The Umbrellas of Cherbourg’ is an absolute treat for film fans, and we at Skipton Film Club are thrilled to be screening it."
