PETE Williams is in no doubt that Wednesday's Skipton Town Centre Cycle Race will be a great spectacle, but he still doesn't know if he will be part of it.

The Embsay rider has a busy schedule with the OnePro Cycling team and is set to head off to The Alps to prepare for a training camp ahead of the forthcoming Tour of Poland.

But if he is back in town and is given clearance by his team, Williams would love to compete in his home race.

Last year he was pipped on the line in a sprint finish to the Elite Men's race by former Ermysted's Grammar School student Scott Thwaites.

Williams said: "There was a great atmosphere in the town and it was an exciting race despite the wet conditions that night.

"I believe that Skipton is a great venue for a race and it should be extremely competitive as it is part of British Cycling's Elite Circuit Series.

"I hope I am able to take part, but if I am not I will be going along as a spectator because I feel it is great to support a local race."

Williams was in action at the National Championships last week. He was fourth in the men's time trial on Thursday and also rode in road race on Sunday where he had team duties to perform.

He will have a similar role to perform in the week-long Tour of Poland which starts on July 12. It promises to be a gruelling event with some tough climbs for the riders to contend with in warm conditions.

The 29-year-old, who took the King of the Mountains on the opening stage of this year's Tour de Yorkshire which finished in Settle, is looking forward to the challenge.

"We are having a training camp in The Alps to prepare ourselves for what lies ahead. It is important we build up our climbing and get in some hard work at altitude.

"The team has been going well this year and it is important we arrive in Poland ready for the challenge."

The action in Skipton starts at 6pm next Wednesday with the junior fun races for under-12s. Its the turn of the under-14s and under-16s at 6.45pm with the men's elite race at 8pm
